Baptism
De doop is een van de twee sacramenten. Through baptism people (children) become part of the community of believers. It is possible to have children baptized if you, as a parent, promise to raise your child in faith and regularly take it to church. Anyone who was baptized as a child can confirm his baptism at a later age by making the profession of faith in the midst of the congregation. There are also people who do not have their children baptized. Shortly after birth, there is often a thanksgiving service for the new life. When the children can take responsibility for themselves and want to go through life in faith, they ask to be baptized. Then they first make a profession of their faith. This means that they tell the congregation how they believe and that they confirm that they consider the church important and want to be engaged in it. There is no age on baptism. A baptism is always preceded by a series of baptismal interviews.
Supper
We celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the first Sunday of the month. The term comes from the Last Supper that Jesus celebrated with his disciples, in which he shared bread and wine, saying: “This is my body, this is my blood, do this in remembrance of me.” We stand in a circle when we share bread and wine (or grape juice). We remember what Jesus has done for us, how He loves us. He forgives us, whatever we’ve done, whoever we are. We form a circle to emphasize that we believe together and grow together towards Him. When we are thus together one with the love of Jesus in our midst, one in the Spirit of God, then we are also with our hearts in the world to come that God has provided for us. It lies somewhere in a future, but it is also at our feet; where we act and speak in the love of God, there arises God’s Kingdom. Where we meet the most vulnerable people, there is Jesus. In the sacrament, these things all come together. It’s a special moment.
Other special moments
Two people saying yes to each other, that happens in our church. With the congregation as a witness, God’s blessing is asked over the life of the brand new couple. Together
we experience this wonderful moment in a beautifully decorated chapel and with a party afterwards. A series of conversations precede the wedding day.
Funeral
When someone dies, our church provides the funeral service. In it we remember the deceased and often something is also quoted from his or her faith. For those who were in the church before us have preceded us in faith. We always look for a form in which the wishes of the deceased as well as those of the family are respected.
